.:: DISASTER RECOVERY ARCHITECTURE - SYMANTEC VOLUME REPLICATOR (VVR)

VVR is a Symantec proprietary solution for the fast recovery of servers or “seamless availability” when servers are down through a planned or unplanned outage. Based on the de facto industry-standard Symantec Volume Manager, Volume Replicator reliably, efficiently, and consistently replicates data to remote locations over any IP network when data loss and prolonged downtime cannot be tolerated.

Working with a federal government agency, Kanatek implemented a VVR solution to provide fast disaster recovery for the Master servers.

The total solution consisted of:

  • Symantec NetBackup DataCenter Server Licenses
  • Symantec NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive License s
  • Symantec NetBackup Client Licenses For Windows NT/2000 and Unix Servers
  • Symantec NetBackup Oracle Agents
  • Symantec NetBackup SQL Agents
  • Symantec NetBackup Vault option to automate off-site tape management
  • Symantec NetBackup Advanced Reporter
  • Global Data Manager to monitor all Symantec NetBackup servers
  • Symantec Volume Replicator and Volume Manager to provide fast disaster recovery for the Master servers

Given this architecture, the client now has the capacity to backup approximately 7 Terabytes of data and additional clients can be added at any time to the solution. To increase the amount of data being backed up, additional hardware may be required in the Tape Library unit. This can be in the form of faster tape devices (Such as SDLT drives) or additional tape drives in each library unit.

The solution provided the following benefits:

  • Disaster Recovery of the Master using Symantec Volume Replicator
  • Backup for all the clients at each facility
  • Weekly backups kept inside the library, with a duplicate copy for off-site storage
  • The ability to connect to each Regional Master server and monitor and schedule backup jobs
  • Full backups completed in less than 12 hours given sufficient LAN bandwidth
  • Incremental backups completed in less than 4 hours given sufficient LAN bandwidth
  • Oracle hot backup for production servers using NetBackup Oracle Agent
  • Backup and restore Oracle at the Database, Tablespace and Data File Levels
  • SQL hot backup using NetBackup SQL Agent
  • SQL database recovery to an exact point in time or transaction log mark
  • GroupWise hot backup using OTM
  • Central monitoring of all backups
