Kanatek worked with a federal government department to design an enterprise backup architecture for their headquarters, which included features for disaster recovery, data protection, best practices in data management, scalability, manageability, and ease of operation. Symantec Volume Replicator and Symantec Volume Manager were proposed to provide Disaster Recovery of the Master server. Using this additional software, the NetBackup database files were replicated from the Master server located at Head Office, to a stand-by server at a local facility across the wide area network.Based on the client's requirements, there was an immediate need to automate off-site tape management. Symantec NetBackup has a Vault option that automates the complex and tedious process of backup duplication and offsite media management. Users can set up policies to control what, when and how backups are duplicated and when tapes will be shipped to and from the offsite vault to ensure minimal loss in the event of a disaster. Symantec Volume Replicator and Symantec Volume Manager provide Disaster Recovery of the Master server. This software will replicate the NetBackup database files from the Master server located at Head Office, to a stand-by server at a local server.
Key features of the architecture include:
Cross Platform Solution – NetBackup DataCenter is capable of backing up and restoring Windows NT / 2000, Novell Netware, HP-UX and HP-MPE/iX.
Cross-Location Solution - The same software was recommended for HQ and the Regions
Complete Functionality – NetBackup can backup and restore all the Microsoft Products (SQL, Exchange, SMS), GroupWise post offices and the Databases in use at the client.
Centralized and De - Centralized Topologies – Each of the locations can operate autonomously while still allowing centralized monitoring and management from HQ. This was achieved with minimal impact on the WAN as backups are local to each Region.
Scalability – The proposed architecture and solution can easily scale to handle increasing amounts of data to be managed and/or increasing numbers of clients requiring backup
SAN Proven Solution – NetBackup has an enviable track record for seamless integration with SAN solutions from many vendors.
Windows Interface – The solution allowed all clients (Windows NT/2000, HP-UX, HP-MPE/iX, and Novell) to be monitored and managed from a Windows 2000 interface
LAN Based Solution – Performing backups across the LAN allowed the client to centralize data management, and to minimize the required number of Tape Devices and cost associated with the solution
Reliable Backups and Restores – NetBackup provides fast, reliable and consistent data backup and recovery for businesses of any size
