Kanatek recently installed a cross-platform back up and recovery solution for a federal government agency using Symantec NetBackup DataCenter, which is capable of backing up and restoring HP-UX, HP-MPE/iX, Windows NT / 2000 and Novell Netware. The amount of data involved was 4.8TB. Some of the benefits of the solution included:
- Cross-Location Solution - The same software is recommended for HQ and the Regions
- Complete Functionality – Symantec NetBackup can backup and restore all the Microsoft Products (SQL, Exchange, SMS), GroupWise post offices and the Databases
- Centralized and De - Centralized Topologies – Each of the locations can operate autonomously while still allowing centralized monitoring and management from HQ. This is achieved with minimal impact on the client as backups are local to each Region.
- Scalability – The proposed architecture and solution can easily scale to handle increasing amounts of data to be managed and/or increasing numbers of clients requiring backup
- SAN Proven Solution – Symantec NetBackup has an enviable track record for seamless integration with SAN solutions from many vendors
- Windows Interface – The proposed solution will allow all clients (Windows NT/2000, HP-UX, HP-MPE/iX, and Novell) to be monitored and managed from a Windows 2000 interface
- LAN Based Solution – Performing backups across the LAN will allow the client to centralize data management, and to minimize the required number of Tape Devices and cost associated with the solution
- Reliable Backups and Restores – Symantec NetBackup provides fast, reliable and consistent data backup and recovery for businesses of any size
These features combined to provide an enterprise solution for the client that is both easy to manage and extremely scalable. Having a homogenous solution at headquarters, and in the regions, maximizes the ease of use, the ease of adding and removing systems, and allows for both local and centralized monitoring and management.
