From High Tech to High Altitudes - Ottawa Business Owner Heads Back to Everest

Tuesday March 30, 2010 - KTI Kanatek Technologies' President and Owner, Terry Kell, is no stranger to taking risks, finding adventure, and investing in creative campaigns to spark interest from his clients. Five years ago, Terry not only sponsored, but participated in a dramatic adventure to Everest that saw him climb to Base Camp and provide the needed backup and recovery solutions required to transmit information back to researchers in Canada. "It was an incredible experience," Terry recalls, "I always knew I would go back."

And back he goes. But this is no typical trip- thanks to a small mobile device that has become synonymous with business and communications, the Blackberry. "One of the reasons that I am able to go on this adventure is because my Blackberry enables me to constantly stay in touch with my family and my business." Thanks to a surge in remote wireless technology offerings, cell service and Wi-Fi will be available at different check points on the 9 day trek to Everest Base Camp, enabling Terry to keep up to date with his business at home and in touch with his friends and family.

Terry's adventure will begin this week and find him at Everest Base Camp come the middle of April, where he will join Canadian mountain climber and friend, Elia Saikaly, who is attempting the summit. During Terry's trip, he will rely on his Blackberry extensively for communications, capturing photos and transmitting video - "I am planning to use email, SMS, and MMS to communicate during my absence, as well as send back videos and photos of the team and our adventure." Terry even notes that in just five years, since his last trip to Everest, the storage and memory capabilities of smartphones have more than quadrupled (his current Blackberry has 8GB of memory) - allowing him ample space to store high quality videos and photos.

Terry will use his time in the Himalayas researching and utilizing emerging trends in the wireless industry while testing the limits of his Blackberry. His staff and management team in Ottawa are excited for his journey but know this is not a break from regular business- "I'm certain this is no typical trip," remarks Fred Dimson, Kanatek's Senior Vice President of Sales, "Terry is making this voyage to push the limits of our client's [RIM] technology and to prove that smartphones are more than just telephones - they are tools that allow us to run a business, communicate with staff and clients, and reach out to family through video and pictures - even when we are on the top of the world."
